Miss Melanie Johnson

The information requested falls within the responsibility of the National Statistician I have asked him to reply.

Letter from Len Cook to Mr. Jim Cousins, dated 5 February 2000: As National Statistician I have been asked to reply to your question on the stock of businesses in the North East. (148878) The Office for National Statistics (ONS) operates the Inter Departmental Business Register (IDBR) that holds information on 2 million businesses operating in the UK, representing nearly 99% of economic activity. It combines information on VAT (Value Added Tax) traders and PAYE (Pay As You Earn) employers. From the register, an annual publication is produced under the title 'Size Analysis of UK Businesses (PA1003): ISBN 0–11–536355–6/ ISSN 1363–9013'. This incorporates counts of businesses by size, classification and geographical location. Data relate to March of each year and include those businesses registered for VAT. Figures for the North East, split by 14 broad industrial groupings of the Standard Industrial Classification, are shown in table 10. The data have been published annually up to 2000. Data for 2001 will be released in summer 2001 in electronic format on the National Statistics website. Additionally, IDBR data are incorporated in the Small Business Service (SBS) annual publication 'Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Statistics for the United Kingdom 1999: URN 00/92M. This covers all businesses in the UK, including estimates for those operating neither a VAT nor PAYE scheme. Data on a geographical basis are available in table 9 but only for 1998 and 1999. Both publications referred to above are available in the House of Commons Library.
