HL Deb 27 September 2000 vol 616 c155WA
Lord Harrison

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in recognition of its importance to Britain's economy, they will add tourism to the title of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. [HL3649]

Lord McIntosh of Haringey

Tourism expenditure was about £64 billion last year and about 1.8 million people are employed in tourism-related jobs, so the industry is indeed very important for us all. We do not think a change of name for the department would significantly change the status and success of the industry. We are confident that we can sponsor tourism vigorously alongside the arts and sport as part of the Government's broader cultural policies.
