§ Dawn PrimaroloIn 1999, 1,813 men and 458 women were charged by Customs and Excise for drug smuggling offences. 1,072 people were convicted and 941 sentenced to imprisonment. A breakdown by gender of those convicted and sentence is not held centrally. The figures for convictions and sentences do not necessarily relate to the same cases as those for charges.
