Information reported by local authorities in their annual Housing Investment Programme returns about housing stock in their ownership is as follows:

Number of dwellings at 1 April
1997 3,400,600
1998 3,309,200
1999 3,177,500

Note:

Figures include all properties owned by the authority, including those awaiting repair or sale and those situated outside their area.
