These units often carry out work on issues that are relevant to both rural and urban areas. Their recent work specifically on rural issues, or with a rural theme, includes:

  1. (a) the Social Exclusion Unit's recent consultation framework document on a National Strategy for Neighbourhood Renewal;
  2. (b) the Performance and Innovation Unit's reports on Rural Economies (published December 1999) and the Post Office network (published June 2000); and
  3. (c) the work of the Women's Unit in ensuring that the preparation of the Rural White Paper takes account of issues of importance for rural women.
