§ Mr. DenhamThere has been an encouraging improvement in the efficiency of cataract operations as a result of the introduction of the phacoemulsification technique whereby ultrasound is used to break up the opacified lens so that it can be removed through a thin cannula. We have allocated £20 million over two years to the modernisation of the equipment and facilities used in cataract operations.
