HC Deb 12 January 2000 vol 342 c206W
Mr. Cox

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food which GM crops are currently being tested. [104288]

Mr. Meacher

I have been asked to reply.

The crops being tested in the field scale trials are fodder maize and oilseed rape which have been genetically modified to be herbicide tolerant. One variety of fodder maize and one variety each of spring-sown and autumn-sown oilseed rape are being tested to provide a thorough evaluation of their environmental impact. All results of the tests will be made publicly available.

In addition, there are a number of crops being grown for smaller-scale research purposes. The crops currently being tested are spring and winter oilseed rape, sugar and fodder beet, wheat, potato, maize, poplar and chicory.
