HC Deb 12 April 2000 vol 348 c187W
7. Mr. Stephen O'Brien

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on the future of the name and insignia of the Royal Ulster Constabulary. [117377]

Mr. Ingram

In his statement to the House on 19 January 2000 my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State announced that the Government have accepted that the name of the Royal Ulster Constabulary should be changed to the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

My right hon. Friend also announced that the new name would come into effect in the autumn of 2001 and that at the same time a new service badge will be introduced. The new Policing Board will be consulted on the new badge.
