Further to the Written Answer by the Lord McIntosh of Haringey on 29 October (WA 54) to the question of income tax refunds paid to farmers, what was the value of losses carried forward from 1997–98 to later years as stated on farmers' self assessment tax returns at box number 3.83; and what is the total of farmers losses for the year 1997–98 as stated in box number 3.73. Sole trading farmers reported an estimated £50 million of 1997–98 losses carried forward at box 3.83 of the 1997–98 tax return. Partners in farming partnerships reported a further £100 million losses carried forward at box 4.17.

Sole trading farmers reported an estimated £150 million losses in 1997–98 at box 3.73, and farming partnerships reported £275 million losses at the equivalent box in the partnership tax return.
