Mr. Baker

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions which of his responsibilities in respect of genetically modified organisms will be devolved to(a) the Scottish Parliament and (b) the National Assembly for Wales. [81461]

Mr. Meacher

[holding answer 20 April 1999]: None. Prior to devolution responsibility for environmental aspects of genetically modified organisms under Part VI of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 in Scotland rested with the Secretary of State for Scotland and in Wales the Secretary of State for Wales. These responsibilities will be devolved to the Scottish Parliament and the National Assembly for Wales respectively.
