As Director of the Office for National Statistics, I have been asked to reply to your recent parliamentary question on job creation.Information is only available on the net change in the number of jobs and not on the number of new jobs created. The information on net changes in jobs is derived from the Short-term Turnover and Employment Statistics. The following table shows the annual levels and net changes in Civilian Workforce Jobs between December 1996 and December 1998 (the latest available figures).
