asked Her Majesty's Government:

When they intend to table a statutory instrument to bring into force Section 4 of the Crime (Sentences) Act 1997. [HL1619]

Section 4 of the Crime (Sentences) Act 1997 will be brought into force in December 1999 by means of a commencement order which the Government plan to lay before parliament in the autumn.

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will ensure that no administrative arrangements are made to implement the mandatory sentencing provisions in Section 4 of the Crime (Sentences) Act 1997 until praying time against the statutory instrument to bring it into force has expired. [HL1620]

The commencement order brining Section 4 of the Crime (Sentences) Act 1997 into force is not subject to an affirmative or negative resolution procedure.
