HC Deb 15 March 1999 vol 327 c512W
Mr. Cummings

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has received concerning the need for Slovak nationals to obtain visas in order to visit the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement. [R] [76262]

Ms Quin

Our decision to introduce visas for Slovak nationals was taken only after careful thought, and as a practical and temporary step to address a practical problem.

Ministers have taken every opportunity to raise the issue with their Slovak opposite numbers. We are pleased that the Slovak Government are determined to tackle the problems which compelled us to take this action.

We review our visa regime at regular intervals. We will lift the requirement as soon as we are confident that the problems which led to the imposition of the visa regime will not reappear.
