To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will announce his decision on the application submitted by PowerGen for consent under Section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989 to construct and operate a new natural gas-fired power station at Gartcosh, North Lanarkshire. [R] [76350]

I have decided to refuse consent for PowerGen's application. This decision has been taken after careful consideration of the Report of the public inquiry into the application and all subsequent representations received (which related mainly to the Government's new energy policy), and is founded on the Reporter's recommendation that consent be refused. A copy of my decision letter will be placed in the Library of the House of Commons.

From 1 July 1999, this will be a mater for the Scottish Parliament.
