To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport how many British individuals took holidays abroad in the first three months of(a) 1998 and (b) 1999; and what their estimated expenditure was in these two periods.

The estimates currently available from the International Passenger Survey, conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), are shown in the table. A breakdown of 1999 visits by main purpose of visit, to reveal holiday visits, is not yet due to be published by ONS.
