To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received regarding proposals for a new Fire Safety Act; and if he will make a statement. [87166]

I refer my hon. Friend to the reply I gave my hon. Friend the Member for Coventry, South (Mr. Cunningham) on 17 May 1999,Official Report, column 264. We have received a number of representations from fire service interests and others. We will bring forward legislation to consolidate and rationalise fire safety law when parliamentary time permits.
