HC Deb 09 June 1999 vol 332 c326W
Mr. McNamara

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what powers are available to the Chief Constable of the RUC to take disciplinary action against officers joining or associating with paramilitary organisations; who is responsible for discipline among police officers from England and Wales serving in the RUC on secondment; and who has responsibility for informing her if a police officer on secondment to the RUC has paramilitary associations[86144]

Mr. Ingram

The Chief Constable's powers to take disciplinary action against a member of the RUC below the rank of Assistant Chief Constable are provided for in the Royal Ulster Constabulary (Discipline and Disciplinary Appeals) Regulations 1988.

The Chief Constable, or Police Authority for senior officers, is responsible for the discipline of police officers from England and Wales on secondment with the Royal Ulster Constabulary. The Chief Constable is also responsible for the investigation of criminal matters and, except for senior officers, for police discipline.
