HC Deb 27 July 1999 vol 336 c165W
Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what steps his Department is taking to promote knowledge of, and interest in, parliamentary government through schools; and if he will make a statement. [92635]

Mr. Charles Clarke

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Education and Employment announced his proposals for the review of the National Curriculum in England in May 1999. This includes for the first time a proposed framework for citizenship in schools as a distinct statutory entitlement at Key Stages 3 and 4. Pupils will learn about key aspects of parliamentary government, elections and voting, and local and central government.
