To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many and what proportion of(a) men and (b) women who have appealed to an employment tribunal in respect of unfair dismissal during the last 12 months have had their claim upheld. [92510]

Between 1 July 1998 and 30 June 1999, the Employment Tribunals received a total of 35,017 applications for unfair dismissal. Of those determined at a tribunal hearing the following numbers were upheld:
