HC Deb 26 July 1999 vol 336 c124W
Mr. Mitchell

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proportion of United Kingdom gross domestic product is accounted for by multinational corporations. [92680]

Ms Hewitt

The information requested falls within the responsibility of the Director of the Office for National Statistics. I have asked him to reply.

Letter from Tim Holt to Mr. Austin Mitchell, dated 26 July 1999: As Director of the Office for National Statistics (ONS), I have been asked to reply to your recent parliamentary question on multi-national corporations. The proportion of gross domestic product accounted for by multi-national corporations is not available. Some limited information on the activity of foreign owned businesses was published in an article Globalisation: scope, issues and statistics' in the November 1997 edition of Economic Trends, a copy of which is available in the House of Commons Library. This article included: information on the proportion of net output accounted for by foreign-owned manufacturing enterprises derived from the Annual Census of Production; estimates of the proportion of turnover and persons employed accounted for by foreign owned businesses involved in certain service industries.
