Mr. Alan Campbell

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many 16 and 17 year olds will qualify over the next year for the Right to Study Initiative in (a) England and Wales, (b) the North-East of England and (c) the Tynemouth constituency. [91941]

The latest estimate, at the end of 1997, was that 110,000 employees in England were aged 16 or 17, not qualified to level 2, and not working towards a level 2 qualification. Comparable figures for Wales and particular regions of England are not available.
