To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions when the A5 Nesscliffe bypass, Shropshire, will be built; and if he will make a statement. [91540]

As we announced on 10 December 1998,Official Report, columns 251–53, work on the A5 Nesscliffe bypass will start in 2001–02.

The orders fixing the line of the road have been made and will be published on 5 August. The Compulsory Purchase Order will be made early next year. Procedures to acquire the land necessary to construct the scheme can then begin. Final confirmation of the precise start date will be subject to the satisfactory completion of the necessary contract process.
