To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many students were submitted for examination at A level in(a) mathematics, (b) physics and (c) chemistry in England and Wales in (i) 1970, (ii) 1980, (iii) 1990 and (iv) the latest year available; and in each case what was that figure as a percentage of the total A-level entries in all subjects in that year. It is not possible to differentiate by age the average cost of pupils. However, the average cost per secondary school pupil in England based on 1998–99 budget figures was £2,930.
