HC Deb 15 July 1999 vol 335 cc279-80W
Mr. Reed

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what percentage of 17 to 18-year-olds in Leicestershire are in(a) schools, (b) further education and (c) work. [91207]

Mr. Mudie

In 1996–97, the proportion of young people aged 16 or 17 at the start of the academic year, in full or part-time education in schools and further education in Leicestershire, were 34 per cent. and 44 per cent. respectively.

The proportion of young people aged 16 or 17 at the start of the academic year, in employment, in the winter of 1998, in Leicestershire was 68 per cent.

Many young people combine work with education so there are significant overlaps between these groups.
