Mr. Baker

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, pursuant to his answer to the hon. Member for Pendle (Mr. Prentice) of 29 June 1999,Official Report, column 150, on mouse-breeding facilities, how many mice were bred in the last year for which figures are available; and how many of those were subsequently destroyed without being used for the purpose for which they were bred. [holding answer 12 July 1999]: In 1998, a total of 16,180 mice were bred by my Department. Of these, 16 per cent. were surplus to requirement and subsequently culled.
