Mr. Austin

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what plans she has to increase funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency. [90343]

Mr. Foulkes

In 1998 we increased our contribution to United Nations Relief and Works Agency's (UNRWA) core budget by £1 million to £7 million, and in addition provided project funding and technical assistance of about £1 million. This year we plan similar levels of expenditure. We would be prepared to consider giving more if UNRWA implements measures to increase its efficiency and transparency.
