To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he is taking to improve the welfare of sheep which are exported from the UK. [87931

Mr. Morley

Whilst the sheep are on our territory we strictly apply the EU rules that relate to their fitness to travel, suitability of the means of transport and other aspects of their welfare.

We also urge the receiving member states to do the same on their territory: officials maintain contacts with their opposite numbers in support of this.
