§ Mr. VazTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the prisons he has jurisdiction for,372W setting out (a) the number of places the prisons were originally built for, (b) the number of inmates currently in each prison and (c) the percentage overcrowding. [67952]
§ Mr. George HowarthThe table lists the certified normal accommodation, population and percentage overcrowding at each prison establishment for which the Home Secretary has jurisdiction on 18 December 1998.
The Prison Service uses the concept of certified normal accommodation (CNA) to define the uncrowded capacity of each establishment. For prisons built in recent years, this is equivalent to original capacity. The CNA measures can also be applied to older prisons, particularly those built in the last century, whose original capacity is no longer relevant because of significant building and or modernisation work.
