§ Mr. YeoTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer when a decision concerning the imposition of a pesticide tax will be made. [66589]
§ Ms Hewitt[holding answer 19 January 1999]: As was made clear in the Pre-Budget Report, the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions has commissioned research into whether a tax or charge on pesticides would be an effective way to reduce pollution. The Government are currently reviewing the findings of that research project, and will evaluate the results of other ongoing work in considering how best to proceed.
