Mr. Maclean

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will list the total farm income for Cumbria for each of the last five years for which figures are available. [70570]

Mr. Rooker

Estimates of Total Income From Farming for counties within England are only available for 1995 and 1996. These estimates are calculated by apportioning Total Income from Farming in England according to areas of crops and numbers of livestock.

Total Income From Farming in Cumbria is estimated to have been £155 million in 1995 and £143 million in 1996.

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will estimate the change in gross terms in total farm income for Cumbria for the latest year for which figures are available. [70573]

Total Income from Farming in Cumbria in 1996 is estimated to have been 7.7 per cent. lower than it was in 1995. Estimates for 1997 and 1998 are not yet available. These estimates are calculated by apportioning Total Income From Farming in England according to areas of crops and numbers of livestock.

Net farm income estimates are based on the Farm Business Survey. The sample size is not sufficient to provide reliable estimates of net farm income by farm types at County level.
