HC Deb 19 October 1998 vol 317 cc1000-1W
Mr. McCabe

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if he will publish the 1997 National Curriculum assessment results in English, mathematics and science for seven, 11 and 14-year-olds aggregated at LEA level; and if he will make a statement. [27373]

Ms Estelle Morris

The 1997 National Curriculum assessment results in English, mathematics and science for 7, 11 and 14-year-olds, aggregated at local education authority level, are contained in a number of tables, copies of which have been placed in the Library.

We have set challenging targets for 11-year-olds' attainment in literacy and numeracy by 2002. We have recently agreed local literacy targets with each LEA, and we will be agreeing later this year similar targets for numeracy. We want to share and maximise the use of National Curriculum assessment data. These data reflect the key role local education authorities have in supporting schools to raise standards.
