Mr. Hancock

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many claims for compensation from Gulf War service personnel and civilians his Department has received to date. [55649]

Mr. Doug Henderson

Up to 15 October 1998, my Department had received 116 claims for compensation arising from a variety of incidents from Service personnel and civilians following Gulf War service. These include claims relating to road traffic and other accidents which occurred in the Gulf region in 1990/1 and claims alleging medical negligence in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In addition, at 15 October 1998, my Department had registered 1,736 current notices of intention to claim compensation from Service personnel, members of their families, and civilian Ministry of Defence employees and contractors in respect of illnesses allegedly arising from the Gulf War.
