HC Deb 19 November 1998 vol 319 cc795-6W
Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what is his estimate of the number of(a) men, (b) women and (c) young people who will benefit from the National Minimum Wage Act 1998 indicating the employment sectors in which the main impact of the Act will be felt.[60548]

Mr. Hain

Figures provided by the Office for National Statistics estimate that 578,000 men and 1,388,000 women in the UK will benefit from the National Minimum Wage Act 1998. Of these 1,966,000, 221,000 are young people aged between 18 and 21.

Comparable figures are not available for Wales. However, it is estimated that 133,000 people in Wales should benefit.

The economic sectors in the UK in which the impact of the Act are expected to be felt are: Hotels and Restaurants; Agriculture, Hunting and Forestry; Other Community Workers; Wholesale and Retail; Health and Social Work. It is not possible to produce a similar analysis for Wales.
