HC Deb 18 November 1998 vol 319 c699W
Dr. Brand

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will list the regulations which permit him to ban NHS prescriptions for Viagra. [60196]

Mr. Milburn

Ministers will be drawing up substantive policy proposals on Viagra shortly and, as an interim measure, the Standing Medical Advisory Committee has advised that doctors should not prescribe Viagra.

Dr. Brand

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will issue guidance on the statutory provisions as they affect private prescriptions issued by NHS GPs to their registered NHS patients for Viagra. [60197]

Mr. Milburn

General practitioners might be in breach of paragraph 43 of their terms of service if they issue private prescriptions for Viagra to patients on their lists. The Department advises that patients requesting private prescriptions should be referred to a doctor outside the practice.
