[holding answer 17 November 1998]: Details of the number of competitive bids submitted by local education authorities since May 1997, along with the number that were successful are given in tables that have been placed in the Library of the House. For 1998–99 there were 20 initiatives involving competitive bidding from local education authorities, which could include bids from education action zones. For 1999–2000 the equivalent figure is 14. Information on the number of competitive bids from other bodies is not held centrally.
