Mr. Maclean

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what was the total number of claimants in 1997–98 for (a) jobseeker's allowance (income based), (b) jobseeker's allowance (contribution based only), (c) housing benefit with jobseeker's allowance and (d) council tax benefit with jobseeker's allowance. Angela Eagle

The information is set out in the table. There is an overlap in the figures as most claimants receive both Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit.

Jobseeker's Allowance claimants, May 1997
Number of recipients
Jobseeker's Allowance (Income-based) 1,224,000
Jobseeker's Allowance (Contribution-based only) 181,000
Housing Benefit with Jobseeker's Allowance 693,000
Council Tax Benefit with Jobseeker's Allowance 686,000

Notes:

  1. 1. Numbers are rounded to the nearest thousand.
  2. 2. Information refers to benefit units, which may be a single person or a couple.
  3. 3. Figures will undercount the number of unemployed jobseeker's as they exclude claimants receiving National Insurance Credits only.
  4. 4. Housing Benefit/Council Tax Benefit figures do not include second adult rebate cases.
  5. 5. The figures shown are at May 1997, and are the latest available in the period specified.
