To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many doctors are employed by his Department; and how they are allocated between services. [58744]

The numbers of doctors employed by the Ministry of Defence are as follows:

Royal Air Force 211
MOD Civilian 195

Notes:

  1. 1. Military figures are as at 1 September 1998.
  2. 2. Civilian figure is as at 9 November 1998.M
  3. 3. The figure for civilian doctors comprises those staff working with the Armed Forces and those who provide an occupational health service to MOD civil servants. It does not include sessional doctors who are employed locally and for whom records are not held centrally.
