To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what was the total cost to public funds of claims by employees and the public for compensation in respect of(a) personal injury and (b) employment protection in the last year for which figures are available. [59057]

Compensation awarded to employees or ex-employees of the Department by either the Civil Service Appeal Board or by Employment Tribunal 265,718.59

Note: The Child Support Agency do not keep statistics on these figures separately, but the total cost to that Agency, in respect of personal injury and compensation awarded for the year 1997–98, was £35,400.
