HC Deb 05 November 1998 vol 318 c624W
Mr. Coaker

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what steps he is taking to ensure(a) the Working Time Directive is implemented in full by employers and (b) employees are informed about their entitlement under the Working Time Directive. [57719]

Mr. Ian McCartney

[holding answer 4 November 1998]: The Regulations implementing the Working Time Directive provide a number of rights, some of which are enforced by the health and safety enforcing authorities (the Health and Safety Executive) and Local Authority Environmental Health Officers, who will investigate any alleged breach of the measures, and others will be enforced by workers bringing complaints to Employment Tribunals.

The Department has run a public awareness campaign in the national press and made guidance material on the new legislation available through a number of public outlets (Libraries, Citizens Advice Bureaux etc).
