HC Deb 05 November 1998 vol 318 c665W
Mr. Waterson

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what additional resources will be allocated to assist farming communities with the fall in produce prices. [58190]

Mr. Rooker

The Government fully appreciate the difficulties currently being faced by all sectors of the farming industry. We are well aware, as a result of discussions with farmers' leaders and visits to rural areas, that many farmers would welcome additional assistance to cope with their current difficulties.

However, given the tight position on public expenditure we must give very careful consideration before extending any package of assistance to farmers. We are keenly aware of the case being put by the farming unions and other interested organisations, and are now considering the options available to us.
