HC Deb 02 November 1998 vol 318 cc315-6W
Mr. Nigel Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport (1) what assessment he has made of the effect which the Football Trust's moratorium on grant aid to league football clubs will have on their ability to meet the required standards for safe terracing by the August 1999 deadline; [57157]

(2) what assessment he has made of the effect of the reduction in the percentage of the cost of stadium development which the Football Trust will contribute on the ability of football clubs to meet the required standards for safe terracing by the August 1999 deadline. [57158]

Mr. Banks

The Government are committed to meeting the August 1999 deadline for safe-terracing at lower division clubs. One of our first acts in office was to announce a £55 million funding package for the Football Trust. This new funding arrangement includes £35 million to help clubs to meet Taylor-related costs, and involves money from the Lottery and Premier League. These funds are in addition to revenues raised through the Reduction in Pool Betting Duty. The distribution of these funds is a matter for the Football Trust. The Football Trust will treat each application on its own merits, subject to the discretion of its Trustees.
