HC Deb 02 November 1998 vol 318 c312W
Mrs. Roe

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what methods of measurements and from what base lines his Department employs in assessing the quality of life implications of policy proposals; and how these were selected. [55767]

Mr. Meale

DETR uses a range of measures to assess policy and other proposals, which include economic, social and environmental indicators consistent with relevant guidance from HM Treasury and other Government Departments. Quality of life relates indirectly to these measures and may depend on a range of factors. In the context of DETR's policy areas, relevant examples are the quality of housing, accessibility considerations with respect to transport services, the health impacts of air quality, and the concept of amenity, which has several applications.
