HC Deb 02 November 1998 vol 318 c427W
Mr. Swayne

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food when he will bring forward new measures to regulate fur farming; and if he will make a statement. [56499]

Mr. Morley

The Government's firm intention is to ban fur farming as soon as practicable. However, primary legislation will be required, and any prohibition on fur farming must be implemented in accordance with national and international law if it is to achieve its objective. We are considering how best to achieve that objective. Any Government proposals for legislation to ban fur farming would be subject to public consultation. All current mink farm licensees have been given notice of our intention to prohibit fur farming.
