To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list the principal works being carried out to the SSNs currently undergoing refit. [40891]

Mr. Spellar

The principal work being undertaken on the submarines currently in refit is as follows:

  1. (a) The removal and replacement of the nuclear fuel and maintenance and repair, where necessary, of the nuclear plant.
  2. (b) A package of capability improvements to upgrade weapon systems.
  3. (c) Essential periodic planned maintenance, update and repairs on the hull and machinery such as electrical generators and propeller shafts, and submarine control systems.

This work will ensure the continued safe operation of the submarines for the duration of the next commission following refit.
