HL Deb 26 March 1998 vol 587 cc251-2WA
The Earl of Clancarty

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they agree with the recommendation of the Museums and Galleries Commission that local authorities should have a duty to ensure adequate museum provision in their area; and whether they will consider extending Scottish legislation embracing facilities for cultural activities to cover the whole of the United Kingdom. [HL933]

Lord McIntosh of Haringey

The Government will encourage local authorities to produce cultural strategies setting out the provision, including museums provisions, which they wish to see made in their areas. We have no current plans to extend Scottish legislation into the rest of the UK, but the need for a statutory requirement can be reviewed in the light of progress.
