§ The Earl of Clancartyasked Her Majesty's Government:
Whether they agree with the recommendation of the Museums and Galleries Commission that local 252WA authorities should have a duty to ensure adequate museum provision in their area; and whether they will consider extending Scottish legislation embracing facilities for cultural activities to cover the whole of the United Kingdom. [HL933]
§ Lord McIntosh of HaringeyThe Government will encourage local authorities to produce cultural strategies setting out the provision, including museums provisions, which they wish to see made in their areas. We have no current plans to extend Scottish legislation into the rest of the UK, but the need for a statutory requirement can be reviewed in the light of progress.
