To ask the President of the Board of Trade what action her Department is taking to express the views of the United Kingdom within the European Union on the proposed abolition of the European Duty Free purchasing schemes in 1999. [24080]

European Community excise and VAT issues are discussed in the Economic and Finance Council where the United Kingdom is represented by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what assessment she has made of the Pieda Report on the impact of the abolition of duty free sales on the Scotch whisky industry; and if she will make a statement. [29456]
