§ Mr. MorleyFinancial aid to encourage farmers to convert to organic methods already exists. There is also advice available free of charge to farmers wishing to convert and we have a substantial programme of research and development in organic farming and horticulture. Currently we are reviewing the levels of aid available under the Organic Aid Scheme. Proposals for the revision of the Scheme are being considered in the light of public consultation as well as the Government's Comprehensive Spending Review and our pledge to live within existing resources.
§ Mr. FlynnTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will assist farmers wishing to diversify into the cultivation of flax and hemp. [31785]
§ Mr. RookerFlax and hemp are useful alternative crops, producing renewable raw materials for a number of uses. Both crops already receive support under a specific Common Agricultural Policy regime. The Department has also provided encouragement to fibre crops under its alternative crops programme.
