To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on(a) the number of electors and (b) the amount of council tax raised per household in 1997–98 in the North Lanarkshire local authority. [45594]

Mr. Dewar

There were 246,452 persons on the electoral roll of North Lanarkshire at 16 February 1997.

The number of chargeable dwellings, on 7 October 1996, was 128,980. North Lanarkshire budgeted to raise £71.8 million in council tax in 1997–98, an average of £556.30 per chargeable dwelling.
