To ask the Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department, pursuant to the answer of 24 April 1998,Official Report, column 722, on human rights, if he will state which aspects of the Government's human rights policy are his Department's responsibility. [44875]

As a central part of their human rights policy the Government are giving further effect to the rights in the European Convention on Human Rights, through the provisions of the Human Rights Bill which is currently before Parliament. The Lord Chancellor is Chairman of the Cabinet Committee responsible for taking this forward.

The Lord Chancellor is responsible for ensuring compliance with the relevant Convention rights as they affect the machinery of justice in England and Wales. The Lord Chancellor is also responsible for ensuring that civil and family law give effect to Convention rights.
