§ Lord GilbertThe most up-to-date additional costs of recent British deployments to the Gulf are those covering the 1997–98 financial year. These will be finalised at the end of May and are expected to be in the region of £8 million. The costs are mainly the preparation, deployment/redeployment costs, plus the costs of additional equipment purchased for the operation. None of these costs is met by the UN. Costs fall to Defence Votes, specifically Class 1 vote 1, operational and support costs, and Class 1 vote 3, systems procurement and research.
